China Convicts Uyghurs on Fake Trials and Launch Campaign on Uyghur Courtyards

On June 6, DW reported that Uyghurs in internment camps were forced to choose the crimes for which they had been imprisoned, often not being told why they had been detained in the first place. Following their crime of choice, Uyghurs had to face a sham trial, in which the detainees weren’t allowed any legal representation, and were convicted without any judicial process.
DW interviewed four former detainees and all of them remembered when they had to choose their crimes, on a paper listing over 70 acts. These acts included ‘’traveling abroad’’ or ‘’contacting people abroad’’, ‘’praying’’ and ‘’wearing a headscarf’’.
This new report comes on the heels of the leaked ‘’Qaraqash List’’ in February, that listed such acts considered illegal and a sufficient reason for detainment in the camps.

On June 11, RFA reported that the local authorities in East Turkistan had launched a new campaign to force Uyghur families to divide their courtyards according to strict regulations over the threat of detention in internment camps.
The new campaign called ‘’Three Separates’’ was announced in the official Aksu Daily, where Uyghur families have to abide by the new regulations that require household courtyards to include an animal pen, a vegetable garden, and a paved verandah. This campaign is part of the authority’s efforts to ‘’beautify’’ the neighborhoods, and non-compliance can lead to detention in an internment camp.
This comes on the heels of the last campaign called ‘’Three News’’ which required Uyghur families to ‘’ modernize’’ their homes according to the rules set by the officials. This is part of the Chinese authorities’ attempts to control every aspect of the Uyghur culture and everyday life.

The Occupation of Alcatraz 49 years ago

Today's history June 11th,1971 with John Trudell.
The Occupation of Alcatraz (Nov. 20, 1969 – June 11, 1971) was a 19-month long protest when 89 American Indians and their supporters occupied Alcatraz Island. The protest was led by Richard Oakes, Adam Fortunate Eagle, LaNada Means, John Trudell and others.
Rare footage. https://youtu.be/U9sBk8Stms4

The protest group chose the name Indians of All Tribes (IOAT) for themselves. The IOAT claimed that, under the 1868 Treaty of Fort Laramie between the U.S. and the Lakota tribe, all retired, abandoned, or out-of-use federal land was returned to the Indians who once occupied it. Alcatraz penitentiary had been closed on March 21, 1963, and the island had been declared surplus federal property in 1964, so a number of Red Power activists felt that the island qualified for a reclamation by Indians.

Though fraught with controversy and forcibly ended, the Occupation is hailed by many as a success for having attained international attention for the situation of native peoples in the United States, and for sparking more than 200 instances of civil disobedience among Natives
.U.S. Attorney James L. Browning Jr. said the raid was triggered when a U.S. marshal observed $680 worth of copper wires and cables being removed from the island in the morning and sold in San Francisco. Three Indians were arrested and charged with theft of government property.
Browning, who announced the raid at a news conference, said continued Indian occupation of the island was intolerable and that the Indians has been “illegally inhabiting the island.”
John Trudell, a 25-year-old Sioux who is a member of the Alcatraz tribal council and was ashore when the marshals struck, told a news conference that Browning had promised “there would be no action against us while we were still negotiating. They lied to us.”
Radio Free Alcatraz
The radio station formed a key ingredient in the occupation of Alcatraz. It broadcast half-hour programs at least 39 times via Pacifica stations KPFA (Berkeley), KPFK (Los Angeles), WBAI (New York), regularly at 7:15 pm PST, to more than 100,000 listeners. Today, the Pacifica Radio Archives has physical copies of 39 broadcasts and four broadcasts have been digitally preserved and are available. Its content consisted of discussions with various members of the occupation, whether Native American or not; and addresses by its prime mover, John Trudell, a Santee Sioux veteran. The station ended its operation when the Federal Government cut off electric power to the island in late May 1971. The FBI regarded Trudell as an especially dangerous voice for Native rights.
Trudell spoke, in a calm midwestern voice, about key issues in Native life: forcible loss of ancestral lands, matters of spirituality, seriously contaminated water supply on Native reservations, sharp inequalities in infant mortality and life expectancy among Native Americans, as contrasted with the majority white US public. He addressed listeners as a plainspoken but calm mediator, not in stinging rhetoric. Each program began with Buffy Sainte Marie’s song "Now That the Buffalo's Gone."

Angola's Cabinda Governor Marcos Nhunga denied to the press that the Frente para a Libertação do Enclave de Cabinda-Forças Armadas Cabindesas (FLEC-FAC) does not exist and there was no armed attack on Cabinda. In reaction, FLEC-FAC Lieutenant General Afonso Zau said that the armed attacks on the border communes of Massabi on June 2, 2020 and on the 6th and 7th of the same month in the commune of Tando Zinze are not inventions. FLEC-FAC manipulation. "FLEC-FAC must not deceive international opinion on a serious and sincere problem."

All charges dropped against 22 Wet’suwet’en land defenders

Criminal and civil contempt of court charges have been dropped against those who were arrested in February for violating an injunction while fighting the construction of a natural gas pipeline in northern B.C.
The arrests of 22 members of the Wet'suwet'en Nation and their supporters sparked protests across the country, shutting down rail and roads and putting a dent in the Canadian economy.
The BC Prosecution Service says in a statement issued Friday that criminal contempt charges for those arrested near Houston, B.C., will not be pursued.
The Crown says there have been no further breaches of the injunction, there wasn't enough evidence linking those arrested to damage to a bridge and recent talks between governments and the Wet'suwet'en hereditary chiefs all played a role in their decision.
Suzanne Wilton with pipeline builder Coastal GasLink says in a statement that in light of work progressing in the area and ongoing talks with hereditary chiefs, it won't pursue civil contempt charges against the protesters.
A post on the Facebook site Gitimt'en Access Point says while they are relieved that charges have been dropped, they know the RCMP arrests on unceded lands was unlawful.

It is an expression of the aspirations of the people of Cabinda for self-determination ”, said Rául Danda, former vice president of UNITA, a native of Cabinda, the conflict “is legitimate, it has a reason to be”, but “the Government of Angola, led by MPLA, has been dealing with the issue in a more simplistic and hideous way”.
