New Cornish Language and Place-Names education pack available for all schools in Cornwall. Kowethas an Yeth Kernewek is
delighted to announce that the Education Pack, produced as part of the
Taves an Tir project has been published. Drawing on the work of the
Taves an Tir Project and its volunteers the education pack has been
collated to provide a broad depth of resources and activities for KS2
and KS3 pupils. Taves an Tir, the Tongue of the Land, A Resources and
Information Pack for Schools, is available free of charge to all schools
in Cornwall and £7 for anyone else that wants a copy.
The Taves an Tir Project is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and key
partners in Cornwall. Meaning the ‘tongue of the land’, Taves an Tir
has sought to raise awareness in the importance of Cornish Language
Place-Names to the history, heritage and culture of Cornwall. Through
the course of the project Cornish Language Place-Names and other
examples of the language were researched in 3 parts of Cornwall:
Lanivet, Heamoor and Tolgus. This has resulted in 3 booklets for each of
the areas and the education pack draws upon project work to provide a
wealth of resources and activities for school children. Starting from
the most basic constructions of place-names in the ancient language, to
specific examples from the 3 areas, the pack provides a great
introduction to the Cornish language that is ever-present in the
landscape of Cornwall.
The education pack focuses on various aspects of the Cornwall’s language, history and culture and provides a great introduction to the subject through a variety of resources and activities. The pack has a wealth of resources including simple Cornish phrases, word searches, songs, dances, recipes and even a play. There are sections on the Cornish language its history and future, a great introduction to the language including simple phrases. Mining and the language are also covered and the link between how the ancient language influenced the industry and how key words from the language like wheal, bal and kibble lived on as key terms in mining here in Cornwall and across the globe.
