CorCom boycotts the India's Independence Day and calls a general strike

CorCom (Coordination Committee) is an umbrella coalition of 6 banned valley-based militant and insurgent groups in Manipur, India, that fights for the sovereign independence of Manipur (which they refer to as Kangleipak). It includes major underground organizations such as the Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP), Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL), People's Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK and PREPAK-Pro)*, Revolutionary People's Front (RPF—the political wing of the People's Liberation Army/PLA), and the United National Liberation Front (UNLF)-MPA. CorCom opposes the October 15, 1949 annexation of Manipur into the Indian Union, rejects communal or ethnic segregation/homelands within the state, and blames New Delhi for manipulating ethnic tensions in the region.

Manipur

In a statement issued by CorCom asserted that the independence of India does not include Manipur (Kangleipak). It said that the Independence Day of India (August 15) has no connection with Manipur (Kangleipak) in any manner. However, local leaders of the alleged puppet State Government have been constantly extolling their Central leaders. With the State Assembly election not far away, the puppet leaders have scaled up signing praises for Indian leaders. Meanwhile, there are efforts to portray the history of Manipur (Kangleipak) as a part of India, it said. Though small in size, Manipur (Kangleipak) existed as a prominent independent Nation in Asia before it was annexed by India on October 15, 1949 in a blatant violation of the Article 2(4) of the UN Charter and the International Law. It was Manipur (Kangleipak) which gifted the game of Polo (Sagol Kangjei) to the world in 3100 BC. After arming and signing Suspension of Operation with some immigrant Kukis and giving military training to armed groups of Myanmar, the Government of India created a number of proxy and mercenary forces within Manipur (Kangleipak) and beyond, it alleged. Using these proxy and mercenary forces, the Government of India has been working to snap the backbone of the 70 year old right to self-determination/National liberation movement of Manipur (Kangleipak), it said.

Socialist Revolutionary Party (SOREPA) Kangleipak, a KYKL split, also called total shutdown from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the day. In a statement, the Publicity and Organization Secretary of SOREPA said that the armed group will support all organizations and revolutionary groups of the region standing against the forced annexation of Manipur.

National Revolutionary Front Manipur (NRFM) called a general strike across Manipur on August 15 from 1 am to 5 pm, opposing the celebration of India’s Independence Day.  Formed on September 11, 2011, by cadres from three factions of the Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP). It was earlier known as the United Revolutionary Front (URF).

Assam

The United Liberation Army of Assam (Independent) and the NSCN/GPRN have jointly called for a boycott of programmes marking Independence Day on August 15, 2026, in Assam and other parts of the Northeast. The ULFA(I) also claimed that it would continue its armed struggle for what it termed the restoration of independence.

In a statement circulated on August 10, United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) said they opposed the celebration of what they described as the “so-called Independence Day” of India, claiming that the indigenous peoples of the region remained under what they termed Indian “occupation” and “colonial rule”.

Nagaland

Finally both ULFA(I) and National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN) - Khaplang / Yung Aung (K-YA) in a joint statement said they were categorically opposed to the celebration of what they termed the “imposed Indian Independence Day”, arguing that the observance represented continued political domination and suppression of indigenous peoples.

The statement alleged that compelling indigenous communities to participate in Independence Day celebrations amounted to a “celebration of colonialism” and described the event as an instrument of psychological subjugation. The organisations, however, said their call this year would not take the form of a general shutdown, citing the ongoing flood situation in Assam.

*  PREPAK-Pro (Progressive): In May 2011, a faction of PREPAK led by its propaganda in-charge declared that the outfit was rechristened or split into PREPAK (Progressive). The faction stated that the new name was adopted to project a more unified, progressive front in line with public and revolutionary expectations, though it retained the core ideology, flag, and founding history of the original group.
