Mohawk Land Defenders demonstrate to protect Oka and oppose a residential real estate

About 100 cars constituted a rolling blockade in the Kanienʼkehá꞉ka community of Kanehsatà:ke on May 22nd. The protest was in opposition to continued land development in the community, without the consent of the Kanienʼkehá꞉ka. The protest highlighted one real estate developer in particular, Grégoire Gollin, who has been building a suburban housing development in the community, and has recently indicated he will cut down some trees in the Pines.

The Kanehsata:ke Land Defence convened community members, and allies from the surrounding region including Montreal, to the protest. The car caravan paraded throughout the community, including near the Oka Ferry Terminal, and ended at the location of the housing development near the Pines. Kanehsata:ke Land Defence members, Ellen Gabriel and Wanda Gabriel, spoke to the media and protesters. Today's protest, building on years of opposition to the specific Gollin housing development by Land Defenders, is likely the first in a campaign of opposition this summer.
