Migizi Communication, a 40 year old Native youth organization, was burned in Minneapolis Riot


In 1977 the Migizi Communications founded in Minneapolis by the American Indian Movement (AIM). The organization is dedicated to produce Indian news and information and educate students of all ages as tomorrow's technical work force. Migizi means "bald eagle" in ojibwe language.

In the third night of rioting in protest of George Floyd's death, May 29th, AIM members were defending this Minneapolis Native youth nonprofit when it caught fire Thursday night from embers that blew over from a U.S. Post office that was torched by looters. However, they could do nothing to prevent the fire, which started on the roof of the Migizi Communications building. American Indian Movement members defended the Migizi building Thursday night into Friday but had to retreat when the structure ignited. Damage could near $2 million, said Migizi Executive Director Kelly Drummer, Oglala Sioux. Migizi provides training in media arts such as radio, film and social media. It is the home of First Person Productions and also provides training for “green” jobs, such as solar energy.
Around 400 youth a year receive job training at Migizi, which employs eight people, Drummer said.
