Saami Council meeting



The Saami Council gathered in Heahttá to hold a council meeting on April 27th-28th. The council meetings are an opportunity to get an update on issues happening in Sápmi, and discuss a range of topics. This meeting’s discussions included various topics such as climate technology and values in Sámi birgejupmi, with a basis in our rights as Indigenous Peoples. he plenary of the Saami Council consists of 15 members, each with their own personal deputy. Each member represents one of the Saami Council’s member associations. The Saami Council has a total of 9 member associations. The agenda includes the following items:
• EMRIP country visit to Norway
• Saami Council’s policy note on local communities and indigenous peoples
•  CARE principles in a Sámi context
• Circular economy in Sápmi
• Seabed mining
• Presentation: The Frozen Arctic project
• Report  from the evaluation of the symbol committee

The Saami Council is a voluntary Saami organization (a non–governmental organization), with Saami member organizations in Finland, Russia, Norway and Sweden.

Since it was founded in 1956 the Saami Council has actively dealt with Saami policy tasks. For this reason the Saami Council is one of the indigenous peoples’ organizations that have existed longest. Member organizations of the Saami Council
