Trial of Relmu Ñanku, Mapuche Woman Leader, in Argentina

Relmu Ñamku, a Mapuche mother of three, is facing up to 15 years in prison over “homicide attempt” charges in Argentina. The trial began on October 26th, six of the 12 jury members are Mapuche, and the trial will be simultaneously translated to Mapuzungun, the language of the Mapuche people.

Relmu Ñamku, a prominent indigenous Mapuche, of the Winkul Newen community, leader from Zapala, Argentina. On Dec. 28, 2012, Ñamku, allegedly injured magistrate Veronica Pelayes during a legal procedure meant to support the controversial oil exploitation of the community's ancestral lands. The indigenous community had set up barbed-wire fences and palisades, saying oil spilling risked contaminating their lands. The confrontation turned violent, and Pelayes was hurt by a projectile. She later identified Ñamku as responsible; first filing a complaint for “attempted homicide and aggravated damage”.

Amnesty International is following the trial (in Spanish) and fully supports the Mapuche Woman Leader as well as the indigenous organisation Confederación Mapuche de Neuquén.

A mixed indigenous and non-indigenous jury started Monday to investigate Relmu Ñamku, a prominent Mapuche leader from Zapala, Argentina – an event with little precedence in the region.

Interculturality was recently granted as a right to all Argentinian citizens. Other Latin American countries have implemented mechanisms in their judicial system that recognize their indigenous populations, but Argentina is the first one to perform an intercultural trial. In this case, six of the 12 jury members are Mapuche, while the whole procedure will be simultaneously translated into Mapuzungun, the native language of the Mapuche people.

On Dec. 28, 2012, Ñamku, one of the Winkul Newen community leaders, allegedly injured magistrate Veronica Pelayes during a legal procedure meant to support the controversial oil exploitation of the community's ancestral lands.

The state official arrived at Portezuelo Chico's remote zone, in the center of Neuquen province, along with security agents and a backhoe, with a legal order compelling the Mapuche community not to hinder the oil exploitation of their ancestral lands by the U.S. Apache Corporation – now relayed by the state-run YPF.
