On 29 June, ten Tibetans were sentenced to between 8 to 13 years in
prison and fined after a 14-hour court hearing in Sangchu County.
The group were arrested in 2019 on accusations of ''seizing construction machinery'' and ''blocking construction'' of a slaughter company, a highway construction and other Chinese construction projects in the area built by the Chinese government. The protesters also demanded compensation for land which was confiscated by the government. They were charged with '' disturbing social order'', ''extortion'', ''verbal threats''.
Among the ten Tibetans were Tashi Gyatso, a monk, and Tsewang from Wanggao Thang in Sangchu County of Ganlho Tibetan Autonomous Region in Gansu Province. The rest were identified as Nyingchak, Gyal-lo, Sonam Gyal, Takthar Gyal, Tenpa Gyatso, Tamdin Dorje, Tamdin Tsering, and Choepa Tsering.
In addition to their prison sentences, the group were fined.Tashi and Tsewang were fined 70000 yuan. Meanwhile, the others were fined 50000 yuan.
Chinese authorities in Sangchu County have officially reported 2020 as the decisive victory in their struggle to eradicate criminals linked with “underworld forces” in Sangchu County. Since 2018, authorities across Tibet have been targeting protesters as part of an ongoing campaign to neutralise what they call “underworld forces” and “criminal gangs”.
