In Carhaix, the Breton patriots have defined their strategy for Breton unity

Last March, the independence organization Douar ha Frankiz launched an appeal for Breton unity, an appeal inspired by a context “where the mobilizations in Guadeloupe and Corsica have led the French State to speak of autonomy as the best tool to solve local problems and peoples’ expectations”. On April 7, for the first time in its history, the Brittany Region also positioned itself, in a wish, for more autonomy. On the strength of this paradigm shift, the Breton identity movement wanted to seize the ball by organizing a day of exchanges on Saturday at the Halles de Carhaix. Purpose of the manoeuvre: to discuss possible Breton unitary demands and imagine the best strategy to obtain their realization.
“Historic Opportunity”

About sixty people took part in these lively exchanges. In the room, several figures of the Breton identity or cultural movement. Some from political parties, without however being mandated by their formations. For Mathieu Guihard, president of the Breton Party, “public opinion is moving in the right direction”. He says he is “resolutely optimistic” and sees in recent developments “a historic opportunity”. “You have to work but it will come,” he hopes. The Carhaisien Fulup Kere, president of the Redadeg, recalls, for his part, “that at the beginning of 1989, nobody imagined the fall of the Berlin Wall. History is thus made of clicks, and this click is perhaps this day, ”he says. In the morning, the debate led to the adoption of a list of four main demands.

2032 in sight

In the morning, the debate made it possible to adopt a list of four main demands: the creation of an Assembly of Brittany, the recognition of the Breton people, the reunification and the co-officialization of the Breton languages. In the afternoon, the participants focused on defining a strategy. Several modes of action are envisaged: reproduce this day of exchanges in different places in Brittany, develop virtual and physical media, organize a symposium on autonomy in Carhaix, in November, with international guests. “Ultimately, we want a constitutional revision and intend to present a written statute, the idea being to draw inspiration from those of New Caledonia or Corsica”, specifies Alan Le Cloarec, from Douar ha Frankiz. In sight, the year 2032, 500th anniversary of the annexation of Brittany, “which would be a symbolic date for wresting this status of autonomy”, he adds.
