CorCom boycotts the India's Independence Day and calls a general strike

CorCom (Coordination Committee) is an umbrella coalition of 6 banned valley-based militant and insurgent groups in Manipur, India, that fights for the sovereign independence of Manipur (which they refer to as Kangleipak). It includes major underground organizations such as the Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP), Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL), People's Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK and PREPAK-Pro)*, Revolutionary People's Front (RPF—the political wing of the People's Liberation Army/PLA), and the United National Liberation Front (UNLF)-MPA. CorCom opposes the October 15, 1949 annexation of Manipur into the Indian Union, rejects communal or ethnic segregation/homelands within the state, and blames New Delhi for manipulating ethnic tensions in the region.

Manipur

In a statement issued by CorCom asserted that the independence of India does not include Manipur (Kangleipak). It said that the Independence Day of India (August 15) has no connection with Manipur (Kangleipak) in any manner. However, local leaders of the alleged puppet State Government have been constantly extolling their Central leaders. With the State Assembly election not far away, the puppet leaders have scaled up signing praises for Indian leaders. Meanwhile, there are efforts to portray the history of Manipur (Kangleipak) as a part of India, it said. Though small in size, Manipur (Kangleipak) existed as a prominent independent Nation in Asia before it was annexed by India on October 15, 1949 in a blatant violation of the Article 2(4) of the UN Charter and the International Law. It was Manipur (Kangleipak) which gifted the game of Polo (Sagol Kangjei) to the world in 3100 BC. After arming and signing Suspension of Operation with some immigrant Kukis and giving military training to armed groups of Myanmar, the Government of India created a number of proxy and mercenary forces within Manipur (Kangleipak) and beyond, it alleged. Using these proxy and mercenary forces, the Government of India has been working to snap the backbone of the 70 year old right to self-determination/National liberation movement of Manipur (Kangleipak), it said.

Socialist Revolutionary Party (SOREPA) Kangleipak, a KYKL split, also called total shutdown from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the day. In a statement, the Publicity and Organization Secretary of SOREPA said that the armed group will support all organizations and revolutionary groups of the region standing against the forced annexation of Manipur.

National Revolutionary Front Manipur (NRFM) called a general strike across Manipur on August 15 from 1 am to 5 pm, opposing the celebration of India’s Independence Day.  Formed on September 11, 2011, by cadres from three factions of the Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP). It was earlier known as the United Revolutionary Front (URF).

Assam

The United Liberation Army of Assam (Independent) and the NSCN/GPRN have jointly called for a boycott of programmes marking Independence Day on August 15, 2026, in Assam and other parts of the Northeast. The ULFA(I) also claimed that it would continue its armed struggle for what it termed the restoration of independence.

In a statement circulated on August 10, United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) said they opposed the celebration of what they described as the “so-called Independence Day” of India, claiming that the indigenous peoples of the region remained under what they termed Indian “occupation” and “colonial rule”.

Nagaland

Finally both ULFA(I) and National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN) - Khaplang / Yung Aung (K-YA) in a joint statement said they were categorically opposed to the celebration of what they termed the “imposed Indian Independence Day”, arguing that the observance represented continued political domination and suppression of indigenous peoples.

The statement alleged that compelling indigenous communities to participate in Independence Day celebrations amounted to a “celebration of colonialism” and described the event as an instrument of psychological subjugation. The organisations, however, said their call this year would not take the form of a general shutdown, citing the ongoing flood situation in Assam.

*  PREPAK-Pro (Progressive): In May 2011, a faction of PREPAK led by its propaganda in-charge declared that the outfit was rechristened or split into PREPAK (Progressive). The faction stated that the new name was adopted to project a more unified, progressive front in line with public and revolutionary expectations, though it retained the core ideology, flag, and founding history of the original group.

ULFA issues ultimatum

United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) ‘commander-in-chief’ Paresh Baruah aka Paresh Asom issued ultimatum to the Central Public Sector Undertaking , North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) to either rehabilitate the flood affected population of Lakhimpur District or face dire consequences, reports Times of India on July 21. Baruah last week had asked the PSU to rehabilitate the affected people after which NEEPCO said that the unprecedented flood in Lakhimpur district is not due to release of water from Ranganadi but due to incessant rain in Arunachal Pradesh. In the current wave of flood, 11 persons have lost their lives in Lakhimpur District.

Meanwhile, State Government has told the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (UMHA) that it will not recommend withdrawal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) of 1958 from a few areas, at least till August 31, because of the possibility of subversive activities by the ULFA-I, reports Times of India on July 21.

Death of "Baba' Khaplang" an irreparable loss - CorCom

Co-ordination Committee (CorCom), a conglomerate of various rebel groups (PREPAK, PREPAK (Pro), RPF & UNLF) operating in the region condoled the demise of NSCN-K chairman SS Khaplang.

In a statement, signed by convener, Co-ordination Committee, Kh Pambei, CorCom declared that the passing away of Shangwang Shanyung Khaplang,(SS Khaplang), chairman of The National Socialist Council Of Nagaland, at the Council Headquarters (NSCN/GPRN), Taka on June 9, 2017is an irreparable loss to the revolutionary struggle of WESEA region.

"Baba Khaplang worked tirelessly and dedicated his whole life for the freedom and sovereignty of the Naga people who are being exploited and colonized, to the extent of deprivation of even their basic human rights.

He is a revolutionary icon of the region" the statement said.

It further added that since his youthful days of Naga Defence Force and subsequently Eastern Naga Revolutionary Council, he was an epitome of struggle and suffering of the Naga peoples.

He was a keen observer and had a clear vision of the common polity of the WESEA people who have common origin, composite history, composite culture and are interdependent and inseparable from one another.

As such since 1976, during his association with AZ Phizo and NNC, he became well acquainted with the revolutionary parties of Manipur to pave the way for a common struggle against Indian Occupation Force and its colonial aggression.

He firmly believed that only a united struggle of the WESEA Region can give deliverance of the people from its' oppressors and enemies; and hence can withstand the challenges of time together, the statement added.

"Unfortunately, the much contentious Shillong Accord broke the Naga struggle into opposing groups, as those opposing the accord formed the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN) in 1980 with Isaac Chishi Swu, SS Khaplang, Thuingaleng Muivah as its Chairman, Vice Chairman and general secretary respectively.

Furthermore, in 1988 NSCN broke into NSCN (IM) and NSCN (K), Baba Khaplang taking over as the Chairman of NSCN(K).

Since then, as his firm commitment and clear vision of the region's united struggle against Indian Colonial hegemony is more correct and acceptable, all the revolutionary parties of Manipur is staying and working together at his eastern Naga areas" the statement added.

Such is his revolutionary wisdom, his command is accepted among the various revolutionary parties of the WESEA Region and he is regarded as a Revolutionary Patriarch and referred to as Baba with much respect and fondness by one and all.

He spent his whole life with his Naga Army in the jungles sharing their pain and hardships; always living a very simple life far from luxury and wanton.

In 1996, he went to Geneva and attended the UN Working Committee on Indigenous Populations, brought the Naga peoples as well as the region's sufferings to the world view thereby exposing India's colonial hegemonic rule.

To the liberation struggle of Manipuri peoples, he is truly a benefactor.

The invaluable contributions of blood and sweat of the eastern Naga villagers living with their meager resources but always ready to share food, shelter and anything else can be attributed to all his magnanimity. "Honourable Chairman Baba Khaplang having firm commitment and belief in a united struggle of the region always advocated for a Revolutionary United Front of the region.

Hence he was the main architect of the erstwhile Indo-Burma Revolutionary Front in 1990.Although IBRF after working for a few years did not progress much, it laid the firm foundation for regional unity of our revolution and the its necessity was understood by all.

Thereby, under the able leadership of Baba Khaplang, again a more compact Regional United Front named UNLFW was formed with KLO, NDFB, NSCN(K) and ULFA(I) with Baba Khaplang as its Chairman and since then is continuing a remarkable fight against IOF" .

"Although CorCom or any representative from Manipur is not in the UNLFW till now, it has been working together with UNLFW under the able leadership of its' honourable Chairman Sir Khaplang and fighting jointly against the IOF.

In such a crucial juncture of our revolutionary struggle, the sudden demise of our respected 'Baba" Khaplang is a shock to us all and it had created a vacuum in our revolutionary struggle" the statement said further expressing profound sorrow with the grieving family, leaders, and the rank and file of NSCN(K) and Naga Army.

Asom Sangrami Mancha announces that they are planning to contest elections

United Liberation Front of Assam cadres who fought an armed battle for "sovereign Assam" and later surrendered are now planning to contest next year's (2016) Assembly election in at least 10 seats as Independents and support a new regional party in other constituencies, reports The Telegraph

All Assam Surrendered United Liberation Front of Asom Samittee (AASUS) - an umbrella body of the former rebels - announced on December 8 that they are planning to contest the polls as over 7,000 cadres who laid down their arms since 1992-93 had not been properly rehabilitated. The AASUS complained that of the 7,392 ULFA cadres who laid down arms, only 165 were given ex gratia of INR 1.5 lakh each by the Government.

"We have decided to support the newly constituted regional party Asom Sangrami Mancha. We may support them because Assam needs a strong regional party. AGP, although it won elections twice, betrayed the people of the state and failed to drive out Bangladesh migrants and could not protect the interests of the indigenous people." The Samittee members will stage a demonstration at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on December 29 demanding introduction of the inner-line permit (ILP) system in Assam, declaring it a tribal state.
