China Convicts Uyghurs on Fake Trials and Launch Campaign on Uyghur Courtyards

On June 6, DW reported that Uyghurs in internment camps were forced to choose the crimes for which they had been imprisoned, often not being told why they had been detained in the first place. Following their crime of choice, Uyghurs had to face a sham trial, in which the detainees weren’t allowed any legal representation, and were convicted without any judicial process.
DW interviewed four former detainees and all of them remembered when they had to choose their crimes, on a paper listing over 70 acts. These acts included ‘’traveling abroad’’ or ‘’contacting people abroad’’, ‘’praying’’ and ‘’wearing a headscarf’’.
This new report comes on the heels of the leaked ‘’Qaraqash List’’ in February, that listed such acts considered illegal and a sufficient reason for detainment in the camps.

On June 11, RFA reported that the local authorities in East Turkistan had launched a new campaign to force Uyghur families to divide their courtyards according to strict regulations over the threat of detention in internment camps.
The new campaign called ‘’Three Separates’’ was announced in the official Aksu Daily, where Uyghur families have to abide by the new regulations that require household courtyards to include an animal pen, a vegetable garden, and a paved verandah. This campaign is part of the authority’s efforts to ‘’beautify’’ the neighborhoods, and non-compliance can lead to detention in an internment camp.
This comes on the heels of the last campaign called ‘’Three News’’ which required Uyghur families to ‘’ modernize’’ their homes according to the rules set by the officials. This is part of the Chinese authorities’ attempts to control every aspect of the Uyghur culture and everyday life.
