Prominent Uyghur journalist disappearred for 3 years, Qurban Mahmut, had been detained

On June 9, RFA confirmed that the prominent Uyghur journalist, Qurban Mahmut had been detained, after his disappearance three years ago. He was the former editor-in-chief of the official Xinjiang Cultural Journal. He went mission in November 2017, a few months after he and his wife visited their son Bahram Qurban in the U.S. His son told RFA that his father hadn’t committed any crime, but believed he was most probably detained for visiting him abroad. The numerous leaks in the past few months corroborate this information. The ‘’Karakax List’’ confirmed that ‘’Traveling abroad’’ is considered a sufficient reason for one to be detained in an internment camp.
The confirmation of Mahmut’s arrest comes amid reports of many prominent Uyghur writers and intellectuals being sent to internment camps or jailed on lengthy sentences, as part of the Chinese government’s efforts to destroy the cultural identity of the Uyghur people.
