Mapuche indigenous who denounced Chilean police brutality, murdered

Alejandro Treuquil, a Mapuche commoner, was murdered in Collipulli on June 4. A bullet impact killed him while he was looking for a horse. Communiqué

The Autonomous Mapuche Community of We Newen denounces the murder of Werken* Alberto Alejandro Treuquil Treuquil, who was murdered at gunpoint on the night of June 4th, 2020, with three other members sustaining injuries. We Newen, under a State of Siege by the Chilean government since May 13th, has been "victim to ongoing political persecution... subject to constant threats, especially our Werken, who has been murdered," in a statement made by the community. Members of the community had filed for preventative injunctions [on violations of personal freedoms] due to the ongoing harassment.
"Our Werken was cowardly murdered by individuals outside the community while searching for a missing horse within our surrounding Lof [territory]. He along with three other community members were ambushed and attacked with fire arms sustaining various injuries. Our Werken Alejandro Treuquil was mortally injured and transferred immediately to hospital to the town of Collipulli, where he succumbed to his injuries."
"We thank the gestures of support and call for people to spread the word," the statement continued. "Please join us in this difficult moment where we have lost a fundamental pillar in our community, an example of struggle for the dignity of the Mapuche people and reference for furture generations that seek to reclaim the land."
Meanwhile, the Mapuche Political Prisoner hunger strike, lead by Machi [Medicine Healer] Celestino Cordova, enters its 35th day at the Temuco Penetentiary, as the struggle for their liberation enters a critical phase.
We call on the international community to denounce the ongoing violence and genocide of our Mapuche peoples and the just struggle for liberation!
